Understanding the factors of shyness
What is shyness?
Shyness is nothing but a feeling of insecurity and extreme awkwardness around others that interferes with one’s day to day functioning. It is prevalent in both adults and children.
Causes of shyness
We all have an episode of shyness at some point or other in our lives. However, it is selective and temporary. Problems occur when shyness takes control of our lives and prevents us from pursuing our career or meeting new people. There are many causes of shyness ranging from genetic predispositions to environmental factors. Scientists believe that severe forms of shyness can actually be the result of our genes. However, this is seldom the case. Many a times shyness is instigated by environmental factors and specially, the home environment. Studies have shown that shy people tend to have at least one shy parent or other close family member. The child can therefore learn this shy behaviour. Other important factor is the early experiences one has with the society. If we are appreciated or accepted by the society then we feel that it is a good thing to be around humans. However, early humiliating or embarrassing experiences in the outside world can be devastating and set the stage for future shyness. Being bossed by parents and peers or being severely criticized by significant people in our lives also lead to feelings of submission resulting in shyness. One is also likely to avoid interaction with others if there are some shameful things in our lives that we do not want others to know. Family problems like divorce or financial problems are examples of this type of shame. Apart from all these factors, personality of an individual can play a crucial role in forming and maintaining shyness.
A vicious cycle
If not controlled, shyness can lead to a vicious cycle, where a person exhibits symptoms of shyness and experiences criticism from others. This can make him withdraw further in his shell making the problem even more serious. Addressing this problem by seeking professional help is therefore very necessary in overcoming shyness.
